AI automation for solar panel installers: how it works
The solar panel market has halved in two years. The question is no longer how to grow, but how to win every lead you still get. Here is how AI helps.
TerenceThe solar panel market has halved in two years. Where in the peak years 70,000 roofs a month were covered, it is now fewer than 10,000 (source: AD, autumn 2025). For you as a solar installer that means: fewer enquiries, thinner margins and competitors going under. The question is no longer "how do I grow fast?" but "how do I get everything out of every lead that still comes in?". That is exactly what AI automation does well for a solar installer in 2026, not to grow, but to survive.
The market has collapsed, and that changes your problem
The figures are blunt. The number of active solar installers fell to 2,748 in the second quarter of 2025, back to the level of early 2023 (source: Chamber of Commerce figures via Solar365). Across the country installers went under, with multiple bankruptcies in a row. And the biggest blow is still coming: the net-metering scheme ends for good on 1 January 2027, with no replacement (source: Dutch government). Homeowners are postponing or dropping out altogether.
In a market like this, the old software logic no longer works. Most installer packages were built for the opposite scenario: a company growing so fast it drowns in leads. That was 2022. In 2026 you do not have a lead problem from being busy, you have a conversion problem from scarcity. And you do not solve that with "yet another tool".

Why "another software package" does not solve your problem
Search for "solar software" and you drown in CRM and ERP packages: OpusFlow, Sollit, Taklo, Hero, Solar Monkey. All decent tools. Solar Monkey is genuinely good at roof scans and quotes; no need to reinvent that. But there is a catch: a package is an empty system you have to fill, learn and maintain yourself. It does not follow up a quote at 10pm. It does not call a cold lead back. And it does not sell a home battery to a customer from two years ago.
That is exactly the gap. Not the tool itself, but the layer around it, the work left undone because your technicians are on the roof and you are writing quotes at night. Socialo builds that layer: done-for-you automation that plugs into your existing tools, not yet another subscription your team has to learn.
What AI can and cannot do for a solar installer
I am honest about this, because overblown promises have already hurt this sector enough.
- No: conjuring demand back. If the market shrinks, no AI brings in customers who are not there. Anyone promising that is lying.
- No: taking over the craft. Measuring a roof, choosing an inverter, installing safely, that stays human work.
- Yes: responding within minutes to every incoming enquiry, day and night.
- Yes: following up quotes automatically until the customer says yes or no.
- Yes: approaching your existing customer base for home batteries and maintenance.
- Yes: taking the admin, work orders, invoices, chasing, off your people.
1. Respond within minutes, because your leads now cost money
In a shrinking market many installers buy leads through comparison sites and marketing agencies. You pay tens of euros per enquiry. So it stings that most leads go to the installer who responds fastest, while you only see that enquiry in the evening, after a day on the roof. An AI assistant catches every enquiry instantly: asks the first questions (roof, consumption, postcode), books a call, and makes sure a paid lead never goes cold. You are already paying for that lead; you want every euro out of it.
2. Follow up every quote automatically
Most quotes are not rejected, they are forgotten. By you and by the customer. A follow-up automation sends a friendly message at the right moments: "Did you get a chance to look at the quote? Happy to answer any questions." No pushy sales tricks, just the follow-up you would do yourself if you had the time. In a market where every deal counts, this is often the difference between a month with revenue and one without.
3. Sell home batteries to your existing customers
Here is your biggest opportunity, and it is the least used. You have hundreds of customers who had panels installed by you in recent years. With net-metering ending in 2027, a home battery suddenly becomes interesting for some of them, record numbers were already installed in early 2026. But be honest: after 2027 a battery only pays for itself in select cases (source: Solar365). An AI system can comb through your customer base, filter out those with high consumption and a suitable profile, and approach them specifically, instead of an expensive mailing to everyone, 90% of whom do not fit. Warm customers, sharp selection, no wasted euros.
4. Remove the admin work now margins are thin
When revenue drops, every hour and every euro counts double. Retyping work orders, reconciling invoices, chasing materials, giving customers a status update, that is exactly the repetitive work AI handles. A technician fills in a work order on site by voice or photo; it goes straight into your bookkeeping (for example Exact Online or Moneybird, two packages I know well). No more evenings lost to admin.
Worked example (not a measured figure): say you get 40 bought leads a month at €40 each, and your conversion rises from 1 in 10 to 1 in 7 because you now respond within minutes. At an average margin of a few hundred euros per installation you more than earn back that entire lead spend, separate from the time you save. Whether that holds in your numbers, I am happy to work through honestly with you.
Do not start with the tool, start with your biggest leak
You do not have to automate everything at once. We first find out where you lose the most money or time right now: slow lead follow-up, an untapped customer base, or evenings full of admin. That is where we start, with something that pays for itself quickly.
- 1. Getting acquainted: Where does your time go, and which systems do you use? We discuss how your business works.
- 2. Opportunities & proposal: You receive a proposal covering automation opportunities, connections, timing and costs.
- 3. Building & testing: I build your system step by step and keep you updated. We test, improve and expand it.
- 4. Live & beyond: Once everything runs well, we launch the system. You track your AIs and their actions in your own dashboard.
No catalogue, no annual contract, no package your team has to learn. Just something that does the work left undone, built for your situation.
